It has been way to long since my last post.  I plan to get this blog back up and running with weekly posts later this fall.  But until then……….

There is news that Upper Deck may be bringing back a new Golf card product as early as 2010!

Bullrock7’s board is a buzz over this new revelation.  You can see the original article from Beckett.com here.  In a recent interview with Upper Deck CEO Richard McWilliam, he states:

“With Tiger Woods on board as an exclusive autograph

signer, another golf trading card product is something

we are hoping to bring to fruition as early as 2010.”

This is great news for not only the Golf card community but for collectors in general.  With the trend towards exclusive contracts throughout the hobby over the last few years who better then Tiger to bring new collectors into the fold?

Upper Deck began creating Golf cards in 2001, including what many have hailed as one of the greatest cards of all time, the 2001 SP Authentic Tiger Woods Autographed Rookie card.  Upper Deck continued to produce Golf cards through 2005, but production levels were lowered drastically by then as 2005 Golf boxes are amongst the hardest to come by.  UD gave us rookies of Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, Annika Sorenstam, Paula Creamer, Lorena Ochoa and so many more.

But with UD out of the game since 2005 they have also missed out on a new crop of upcoming PGA Tour players.  How sweet would it be to rip open a pack of 2010 SP Authentic Golf and find a rookie autograph of Anthony Kim, Camilo Villegas, Lucas Glover, Michelle Wie, Y.E. Yang, etc.  With five years between new golf products you can bet the 2010 edition will be jammed pack with first time rookie cards in a set that could be as epic as 2001 SP Authentic itself.  Lets just hope the speculated new golf product is not just a Tiger Woods box set of some kind.

While I would like to think my “Bring Golf Cards Back” petition was a catayst in Upper Deck’s decision to bring golf cards back, I doubt the 35 total signatures had an impact.  But if Upper Deck is reading I hope they will take into account the many suggestions made in the petition by hard core golf card collectors.  Among the many ideas for what collectors would like to see in a new golf product were:

  •  Autograph Tournament Flag redemptions signed by the tournament winner for every tourny on the PGA Tour

  • Patch Cards (Tiger’s Nike logo, Woody’s Tabasco logo, etc.)

  • Actual Autographed Scorecards from PGA Tour tournament winners

  • More Ben Hogan and Bobby Jones cut singnature cards

  • Golf Club used cards (pieces of players real clubs)

  • Player Ball Marker cards

  • Masters Tickets (it’s worth a shot right?)

We can only hope the speculation by Upper Deck’s CEO is true and that we will be seeing a new Golf Card product as soon as next year.  I’ll be counting down the days.

Stay tuned here for any new information on this exciting news.
